VINOS DE LA TIERRA DE CADIZ

Vicente Taberner: champion of Andalusian fine red wines Although Andalusia is best known for being a land of fortified and white wines, Vicente Taberner has been able to create some excellent reds, sold under the label of Vinos de la Tierra de Cádiz, at his bodega: Huerta de Albalá. Recognition from both national and international experts, praising the quality of his wines, was fast to follow; a fact demonstrated by the Gold Medal awarded to “Taberner 2006” at the London International Wine & Spirit Competition 2008. Vicente Taberner is an expert businessman passionate about the wine world, who, in 1992, decided to create a wine importer in Germany. From that moment on, new ventures sprang up and in 1994 he started to scout for a bodega in Spain. In 1998 he became a partner at Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla, under DO Jerez, and his experience in the region lead him to study the possibility of building a red wine bodega in Cádiz; an idea he put in to practice in the year 2000. The chosen municipality was Arcos de la Frontera; the name of the bodega, Huerta de Albalá. “I think Cádiz still has a lot to discover and added to that, I’m a person who likes to break the mold”, Taberner stated. The choice of Arcos de la Frontera was down to its orography, its microclimate, and the specifications of the terroir, which has fabulous technical characteristics and, at the same time, is bursting with charm and culture. That was where Taberner planted his first vines, in January 2002, finishing the process in 2005, the year of his first harvest, released on the market in 2007. Hence, we are dealing with a young bodega which makes wine from equally young vines. The secret behind making fine wines such as ‘Taberner’ and ‘Taberner 1’ is in the intense work carried out in the vineyard, coordinated by the experienced oenologist with Rioja roots, Milagros Viñegra. “I truly believe fine wines can also be made from young vines. We’ve already achieved it by using the best viticulture and by discarding half the grapes during the various pruning and thinning processes”, she explained. www.winesfromspain.com http://www.winesfromspain.com/icex/cda/controller/pageGen/0,3346,1549487...
