D.O. PLA I LLEVANT
The DO is named after one of the island's districts (comarcas) and, in Mallorquí, it means 'plain and east coast'. The DO's regulation was published in spring 2001.
The vineyards lie in the flat, chalky central and eastern areas of the island, which offer optimum soil conditions.
The growing area is centred on Felanitx and Manacor. The soil here is relatively fertile, consisting of light alluvial topsoil over clay with limestone outcrops.
Recently introduced grape varieties from other Spanish regions and other countries are being planted to blend with native grapes such as Prensal Blanc, Callet, Fogoneu and Manto Negro. Traditionally Fogoneu predominated.
