D.O. GETARIAKO TXAKOLINA
The Basque Country’s fresh, white wine, called txakoli on home ground and chacolí elsewhere in Spain, is produced in the region’s three provinces. The DO, which encompasses the growing area in the province of Guipuzcoa (Gipuzkoa), is called Getariako Txakolina in Basque.
The DO vineyards are situated in the foothills of the mountains running down to the sea in Guipuzcoa (Gipuzkoa), the Basque Country’s northwesterly province, which borders on to France.
Two varieties of grapes are used to make chacolí -Hondarrabi (or Ondarribi) Zuri, a white grape, which accounts for 95% of the DO area, and Hondarrabi Beltza, a red grape, which accounts for the remaining 5% of vineyards. Many of the vines are over eighty years old, with roots going as deep as 10 metres into the soil.
